Sophie Hemels

“As a true 90s kid, Sophie understands the power of social media. Her work, as pure and honest as it gets, found its way to a niche audience thanks to her very own effort and coolness – the commercial market is soon to follow. Coming across her work on – of course – Instagram, I just wanted two things: to have her work for me and to be her friend. Her photos are like an inside look on today’s youth. You can’t stage this.”

Editor-in-Chief of i-D NL, Channah Brunt
Sophie Hemels is a 24-year-old self-taught photographer based in Amsterdam/Berlin, formerly known under her pseudonym Francis Morris Morrison. After graduating from the Dutch National Ballet Academy in 2012 she decided to find a life. She explored outskirts of the world to seek adventure, accompanied with her dad’s old camera. Ever since 2013 she’s been shooting artists, cool kids and everything that moves on a skate or surfboard with her duct-taped Nikon Fm2.
Sophie shoots a world she would like to live in, creating colorful, sunny images where grungy kids rule and the fun never ends. Finding her models on the street or on Instagram, she has a unique way of portraying youth in a energetic way, making sure you see their lust for life and giving the feeling she is shooting her friends.
